Smith shines for P-15's

Patrick Enzor / The Item Teammates surround Sumter pitcher J. Tyler Smith after the P-15’s won their 14th state championship on Wednesday after defeating Murrells Inlet 4-2 in the American Legion state tournament.

COLUMBIA - From his perch in center field at Capital City Stadium, Sumter's J. Tyler Smith watched teammate and starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery go to field a bunt in the first inning of the P-15's championship game against Murrells Inlet in the American Legion baseball state tournament on Wednesday.

He saw Montgomery trip and go to the ground while trying to pick up the bunt, allowing the runner to reach. Smith kept waiting for Montgomery to get up, but then he saw him holding his knee.

"I thought he would be getting up," Smith said. "When he didn't, I then started to realize that was coming in to pitch."

And pitch he did. Smith came on in relief of Montgomery with two on and no outs and pitched the rest of the way, earning the victory in the P-15's 4-2 victory that clinched the state crown and earned them a berth in next week's Southeast Regional.

Maturity, experience helped P-15's win title

Patrick Enzor / The Item Sumter third baseman Patrick Gordon throws to first baseman Zach Sherrill for the last out of the American Legion baseball state championship game against Murrells Inlet.

With a team that included the likes of Matt Talley, Travis Witherspoon, Matt Price, Tyler Christman, Tony Micklon and Quentrell Nelson, Caldwell and Blackmon were key parts, but not leaders.

After Wednesday's 4-2 victory over Murrells Inlet on Wednesday, the duo will be the leaders of a team on its way to the Southeast Regional in Columbia, Tenn., set to begin on Aug. 4.

"It feels good to be part of this and it shows that we're a really good team," said Caldwell, whose team improved to 31-3 after winning the deciding game in the state tournament at Capital City Stadium."We didn't know how far this team would go, but it was a goal to win this. The team really worked hard for it."

Caldwell was named the most valuable offensive player for the tournament, going 7-for-20 with two doubles, a triple and a home run while driving in six runs scoring three times.

P-15's win, become last unbeaten

BY DENNIS BRUNSON dennisb@theitem.com

COLUMBIA - The Sumter P-15's are the last undefeated team in the American Legion baseball state tournament, but they made their fans' hearts skip a few beats before securing that distinction.

Sumter took a 9-4 lead into the top of the ninth inning against West Columbia on Sunday. Post 79 scored three runs and left the bases loaded on a deep fly out to left field as the P-15's held on for a 9-7 victory at the Dreher High School Baseball Field next to Memorial Stadium.

"We knew we were going to have to score runs against this team," said Sumter head coach Wallie Jones, whose team picked up its 30th victory in 32 games. "They are a team that comes back, comes back, comes back. We got what we needed though. All's well that ends well."

The victory means the P-15's will be in the championship round regardless of what it does today in its game against Rock Hill scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Capital City Stadium. If Sumter beats Rock Hill, the winner of the 3 p.m. game between West Columbia and Murrells Inlet will have to beat Sumter twice on Tuesday. If Rock Hill were to beat Sumter, Rock Hill would play the West Columbia-Murrells Inlet winner at 11 a.m. at Capital City Stadium on Tuesday with Sumter waiting for the winner of that game for an approximate starting time of 3 p.m. at the Dreher field.

Timely hits lift P-15's to win

Dennis Brunson / The Item Sumter pitcher J. Tyler Smith prepares to deliver a pitch in the P-15’s 9-6 win over Gaffney in the American Legion state tournament on Saturday at Capital City Stadium in Columbia. Smith picked up the victory for Sumter, which will play in a winners bracket game today at 7 p.m. at the Dreher High School Baseball Field.

COLUMBIA - The Sumter P-15's didn't hit the ball well with runners in scoring position in its 6-4 victory over Richland in the opening game of the American Legion baseball state tournament on Friday. They were able to do that on Saturday against Gaffney in a winners bracket game and they needed every one of them.

Sumter had four two-out hits that accounted for six runs batted in as it defeated Post 109 9-6 at Capital City Stadium.

"We knew we were going to have to score some runs today," said Sumter head coach Wallie Jones, whose team improved to 29-2 on the season. "Gaffney has a good hitting team. We certainly got some big hits when we needed them."

The P-15's advance to the last undefeated game today at 7 p.m. where they will face West Columbia, which held off Rock Hill 10-8 in 10 innings on Saturday. The game will be played at the Dreher High School Baseball Field located next to Memorial Stadium on South Holley Street.

P-15's put together 6-4 win

Keith Gedamke / The Item Sumter pitcher Jordan Montgomery delivers a pitch to a Richland Post 6 batter in the first round of the American Legion State Tournament at Dreher High School on Friday. Sumter won 6-4.

COLUMBIA - The Sumter P-15's hit the baseball solidly through the first five innings of its opening game in the American Legion state tournament against Richland Post 6 on Friday. Sumter had eight hits, but had just one run to show for it as it left seven runners on base, including five in scoring position.

The P-15's tried a different approach - somewhat unintentionally - in the sixth and the floodgates opened.

Sumter took advantage of two infield hits, a bloop double and a ball lost in the lights to plate five runs and go on to a 6-4 victory at Memorial Stadium.

"I thought we hit the ball pretty well through the early innings, but didn't have anything to show for it," said Sumter head coach Wallie Jones. "We then got some chip shots in there and got five runs."

Sumter, which improved to 28-2 on the season, will face Gaffney today at 3 p.m. in a winners bracket game. Gaffney beat Florence 8-3 on Friday. Richland, 9-11, will face Florence today at noon in an elimination game.

P-15's advance

Keith Gedamke / The Item Sumter shortstop Bruce Caldwell, left, applies a late tag to Hartsville's Jacob Cole in the P-15's 4-0 victory on Thursday at Riley Park. With the win, Sumter advances to the state tournament.

If the Sumter P-15's don't make the American Legion baseball state tournament, head coach Wallie Jones considers the season to be a disappointment.

While there may be a few low spots still ahead for Sumter, the season can't be deemed a disappointment because there is more season left to play.

The P-15's earned a spot in next week's state tournament in Columbia with a 4-0 victory over Hartsville on Thursday at Riley Park. The victory earned Sumter a 3-0 sweep of Post 53 in the best-of-five second-round series.

Sumter will go into the state tournament as the No. 1 seed from the lower state as it went undefeated in six playoff series games and owns the best runs allowed per game average at 1.50.

"It is always nice when you accomplish this," said Jones, whose team improved to 27-2 on the season.

P-15's blast Hartsville 12-1; lead series 2-0

By PATRICK ENZOR penzor@theitem.com

KELLEYTOWN -Sequels are hardly as good as the original, but for the Sumter P-15's on Wednesday Game 2, Part II was just about as good as The Godfather, Part II.

After the first try to get Game 2 of Sumter's American Legion baseball second-round state playoff series with Hartsville in failed on Tuesday because of lightning and rain, Sumter scored seven runs on just two hits and five Hartsville errors in the sixth innings en route to a 12-1 win on Wednesday.

The P-15's are up 2-0 in the series and can advance to the state tournament with a win today in Game 3 at Riley Park beginning at 7:30 p.m.

"They gave us some runs, but we kept putting pressure on them," said Sumter head coach Wallie Jones, whose team improves to 26-2. "They helped us some, but we were able to move some runners around."

Montgomery no-hits Hartsville

BY DENNIS BRUNSON dennisb@theitem.com

In a baseball game in which the start was delayed for over two hours and took the steady work of several people for well over three hours just to make the field playable, Sumter P-15's pitcher Jordan Montgomery turned it into something special.

The left-hander threw a no-hitter in a 10-0 victory over Hartsville in the opening game of the best-of-five second-round series of the American Legion state playoffs at Riley Park on Monday.

"I really didn't think we were going to play tonight," said Montgomery, who had 13 strikeouts against just two walks. "I was at my house and the way it was raining, I didn't think we would play. I got to the park about 6:30 (p.m.) and there really wasn't anything to do."

Sumter head coach Wallie Jones and his coaches, the regular grounds crew and extra workers from the City of Sumter were busy though, trying to get water off both the infield and outfield dropped from the dangerous storms that started passing through Sumter around 4:30. It was a work in progress throughout until the field was finally ready to go with first pitch at 9:31 for the game originally scheduled for a 7:30 start.

P-15's sweep Summerville

Patrick Enzor / The Item Sumter catcher Blake Graham applies the tag to Summerville's Jacob Williams for an out in the first inning of Sumter's 10-2 victory on Wednesday at Riley Park. The P-15's swept the first-round state playoff series 3-0.

The Sumter P-15's defeated Summerville 10-2 on Wednesday at Riley Park to sweep the best-of-five first-round series in the American Legion state playoffs. Perhaps more importantly, Patrick Gordon solidified himself as the No. 3 pitcher in the rotation.

After pitching eight innings in a 4-3 victory over Hartsville on Friday, the right-handed Gordon came back with another eight-inning performance against Summerville. He allowed just six hits while striking out 13 and walking two.

"Patrick did another good job for us again tonight," said Sumter head coach Wallie Jones. "He pitched out of some trouble in the first inning and really settled down. He could have gone nine tonight if needed, but we wanted to get (Andrew) Reardon some work."

Sumter will take a 24-2 record into its second-round series scheduled to begin on Monday against the winner of the Hartsville-Conway series. Conway leads the series 2-1 after beating Hartsville 9-4 on Wednesday.

P-15's crush Summerville; take 2-0 series lead

By C.R. Cumbee Special to The Item

SUMMERVILLE - The Sumter P-15's American Legion baseball team sent 17 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning, scoring 13 of them to build an insurmountable lead in a 26-6 rout of Summerville in Game 2 of the best-of-five playoff series on Tuesday.

Sumter can close out the series with a win Wednesday.

"Offensively, we played well," said Sumter head coach Wallie Jones. "They gave us some runs, but I was glad we just didn't shut down. The guys battled every at-bat.

"Certainly, we want to win tomorrow night and take a little break, but we have to go out and do it," he added.

J. Tyler Smith pitched six innings, yielding six runs -- three earned -- while striking out 13. He also had a big night at the dish, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and four runs batted in.

P-15's win playoff opener

Keith Gedamke / The Item Sumter pitcher Jordan Montgomery delivers a pitch during the P-15's 10-0 victory over Summerville in the opening game of the first-round state playoffs series on Monday at Riley Park. Montgomery went the distance, allowing just three hits while striking out 12.

The Sumter P-15's got off to what some might consider a slow start against Summerville on Monday in the opening game of their American Legion baseball state playoffs first-round series at Riley Park. After all, the score was 1-0 Sumter after three innings.

When all was said and done, however, the P-15's finished up with a 10-0 victory over Summerville, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win by the 10-run mercy rule.

The second game of the best-of-five series will be played at the Gregg Middle School field in Summerville today beginning at 7:30 p.m.

"I thought we came out like we were ready to play tonight," said P-15's head coach Wallie Jones, whose team improved to 22-2 on the season. "We didn't score as many runs as we would have liked, but their pitcher, Cory Haviland, was doing a pretty good job."

The same can be said for Sumter starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery, who went the distance for the three-hit shutout. He struck out 12 and walked four, two coming in the first inning and the other in the second.
