Jones resigns as P-15's coach

By DENNIS BRUNSONdennisb@theitem.comThe Item

Wallie Jones says his health is fine, there are no hurt or bitter feelings, no underlying circumstances.

After 25 years, nine state titles and two Southeast Regional crowns, it was just time for him to step down as the head coach of the Sumter P-15's American Legion baseball team.

"I prayed and pondered over this, and I've got total satisfaction with this decision," said Jones, who finishes with a career record of 637-187. "I told a group I met with last night that if you guaranteed we would win the American Legion World Series in 2012, I still wouldn't come back and coach. This is the right decision."

Winning the American Legion World Series is about the only thing the P-15's didn't do during his time in charge; however, Jones did take the program to its first two World Series in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 2006 and Shelby, N.C., in 2008. The P-15's finished fourth in '06 and third in '08.

Sumter went 31-8 in Jones' final year at the helm, finishing third in the Southeast Regional held at Riley Park. It was at that point Jones thought he was done with the job.

"When we got to the end, I told (wife) Marcia, 'I think I'm done,'" Jones said. "Marcia said, 'Are you sure about that?' My dad (the late Bernie Jones, who preceded Wallie as a P-15's head coach and served with him as an assistant) always told me not to make any decisions right after the season because of the emotions, the highs and lows. I did that, and it came back to this."

Reardon stellar, Sumter advances

With regular starting pitcher Tyler A. Smith sporting a tender left arm, the Sumter P-15's had to turn to fellow lefty Andrew Reardon in Game 4 of their second-round series against Manning-Santee in the American Legion baseball state playoffs.

While pitching in nine games, Reardon had only pitched 22 2/3 innings.

Manning stays alive

By DENNIS BRUNSON dennisb@theitem.com

Manning-Santee Post 68 knows a thing or two about being in 0-2 holes. That's been the case in both of its American Legion baseball series.

Now Post 68 wants to see if it can match what it did against Conway in the first round - winning the final three games to win the series - against Sumter in the second round. Manning took the first step on Thursday at Riley Park, winning 11-9.

P-15's win to go up 2 - 0

MANNING -- Another blowout appeared in the offing for the Sumter P-15's in Game 2 of its second-round American Legion baseball state playoff series against Manning-Santee on Wednesday as Sumter had a 6-0 lead after 1 1/2 innings.

Post 68 had other ideas, though, as it battled back to within a run. However, the P-15's, who won the opener 13-0, put up four runs in the top of the ninth to hold on for a 12-8 victory at Monarch Field and take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series.

P-15's batter Manning 13-0

Manning-Santee Post 68 came into its second-round series in the American Legion baseball state playoffs against Sumter on a roll, having won three straight games over Conway to win the first-round series after losing the first two in the best-of-five series.

The P-15's broke Manning's momentum on Tuesday, scoring eight runs in the first three innings and riding a four-hit shutout from left-hander Jordan Montgomery to win 13-0 in seven innings due to the 10-run mercy rule at Riley Park.

P-15's move on in playoffs

While it didn't finish the way most had envisioned it, Sumter is on its way to the second round of the American Legion baseball state playoffs.

After beating Summerville 10-0 in the first game of a doubleheader in their first-round state playoff series on Thursday at Riley Park, the P-15's struggled in Thursday's second game before winning 17-7 to sweep the best-of-five series 3-0.

Montgomery, P-15's whip Summerville

By JUSTIN DRIGGERS jdriggers@theitem.com

Head coach Wallie Jones and the Sumter P-15's got pretty much what they expected out of Jordan Montgomery on Tuesday at Riley Park - a dominating performance.

"At this level, if a guy can throw 87 (miles an hour) and get three pitches over the plate, he's going to be very successful and Jordan was," Jones said.

P-15's win big

While nothing was on the line playoff-wise in Friday's regular-season finale between Sumter and Camden, P-15's head coach Wallie Jones didn't want his team limping into the postseason.

Tyler A. Smith and the Sumter offense made sure that didn't happen.

P-15's roll past Dalzell-Shaw

J. Tyler Smith was supposed to take the mound for the Sumter P-15's on Thursday in their American Legion baseball game against Dalzell-Shaw Post 175. However, the right-hander came up sick hours before the game, so Sumter turned to Tyler Pannell, who was making his first career start for the P-15's.

The young righty came through with flying colors, scattering two hits in five innings of work to get the win in Sumter's 13-3 victory at the Crestwood High School field.
