Montgomery no-hits Hartsville

BY DENNIS BRUNSON dennisb@theitem.com

In a baseball game in which the start was delayed for over two hours and took the steady work of several people for well over three hours just to make the field playable, Sumter P-15's pitcher Jordan Montgomery turned it into something special.

The left-hander threw a no-hitter in a 10-0 victory over Hartsville in the opening game of the best-of-five second-round series of the American Legion state playoffs at Riley Park on Monday.

"I really didn't think we were going to play tonight," said Montgomery, who had 13 strikeouts against just two walks. "I was at my house and the way it was raining, I didn't think we would play. I got to the park about 6:30 (p.m.) and there really wasn't anything to do."

Sumter head coach Wallie Jones and his coaches, the regular grounds crew and extra workers from the City of Sumter were busy though, trying to get water off both the infield and outfield dropped from the dangerous storms that started passing through Sumter around 4:30. It was a work in progress throughout until the field was finally ready to go with first pitch at 9:31 for the game originally scheduled for a 7:30 start.

P-15's sweep Summerville

Patrick Enzor / The Item Sumter catcher Blake Graham applies the tag to Summerville's Jacob Williams for an out in the first inning of Sumter's 10-2 victory on Wednesday at Riley Park. The P-15's swept the first-round state playoff series 3-0.

The Sumter P-15's defeated Summerville 10-2 on Wednesday at Riley Park to sweep the best-of-five first-round series in the American Legion state playoffs. Perhaps more importantly, Patrick Gordon solidified himself as the No. 3 pitcher in the rotation.

After pitching eight innings in a 4-3 victory over Hartsville on Friday, the right-handed Gordon came back with another eight-inning performance against Summerville. He allowed just six hits while striking out 13 and walking two.

"Patrick did another good job for us again tonight," said Sumter head coach Wallie Jones. "He pitched out of some trouble in the first inning and really settled down. He could have gone nine tonight if needed, but we wanted to get (Andrew) Reardon some work."

Sumter will take a 24-2 record into its second-round series scheduled to begin on Monday against the winner of the Hartsville-Conway series. Conway leads the series 2-1 after beating Hartsville 9-4 on Wednesday.

P-15's crush Summerville; take 2-0 series lead

By C.R. Cumbee Special to The Item

SUMMERVILLE - The Sumter P-15's American Legion baseball team sent 17 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning, scoring 13 of them to build an insurmountable lead in a 26-6 rout of Summerville in Game 2 of the best-of-five playoff series on Tuesday.

Sumter can close out the series with a win Wednesday.

"Offensively, we played well," said Sumter head coach Wallie Jones. "They gave us some runs, but I was glad we just didn't shut down. The guys battled every at-bat.

"Certainly, we want to win tomorrow night and take a little break, but we have to go out and do it," he added.

J. Tyler Smith pitched six innings, yielding six runs -- three earned -- while striking out 13. He also had a big night at the dish, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and four runs batted in.

P-15's win playoff opener

Keith Gedamke / The Item Sumter pitcher Jordan Montgomery delivers a pitch during the P-15's 10-0 victory over Summerville in the opening game of the first-round state playoffs series on Monday at Riley Park. Montgomery went the distance, allowing just three hits while striking out 12.

The Sumter P-15's got off to what some might consider a slow start against Summerville on Monday in the opening game of their American Legion baseball state playoffs first-round series at Riley Park. After all, the score was 1-0 Sumter after three innings.

When all was said and done, however, the P-15's finished up with a 10-0 victory over Summerville, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win by the 10-run mercy rule.

The second game of the best-of-five series will be played at the Gregg Middle School field in Summerville today beginning at 7:30 p.m.

"I thought we came out like we were ready to play tonight," said P-15's head coach Wallie Jones, whose team improved to 22-2 on the season. "We didn't score as many runs as we would have liked, but their pitcher, Cory Haviland, was doing a pretty good job."

The same can be said for Sumter starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery, who went the distance for the three-hit shutout. He struck out 12 and walked four, two coming in the first inning and the other in the second.

P-15's edge Hartsville

Keith Gedamke / The Item Sumter pitcher Patrick Gordon delivers a pitch during the P-15's 4-3 victory over Hartsville on Friday at Riley Park.

The Sumter P-15's got a great pitching performance from Patrick Gordon in their American Legion League III baseball game against Hartsville on Friday, but some spotty Sumter defense had the game tied entering the bottom of the eighth inning.

However, the P-15's pushed across a run and shut down a two-out rally by Hartsville in the top of the ninth for a 4-3 victory at Riley Park.

The league champion P-15's picked up their 20th victory of the season in 22 contests while improving to 18-1 in league play. Hartsville finishes the regular season with an 11-9, but will begin the state playoffs next week as will Sumter.

"Whether or not we won this game, it was a positive experience because of the performance we got from Patrick," said P-15's head coach Wallie Jones. "He did a good job. We needed a good performance from him and he gave it to us.

Sumter cruises past Camden 12-2

BY TOM DIDATO Special to The Item

CAMDEN - On a night when the Sumter pitching staff did not require a whole lot of run support, it took one swing of the bat from cleanup hitter Michael Blackmon to give visiting Post 15 all the offense it would need in a 12-2 win over host Camden in a American Legion League III baseball game on Thursday at American Legion Park.

After teammates Jeremy Buckner and Bruce Caldwell reached Post 17 starter Matt Cook for consecutive one-out singles in the top of the first inning, Blackmon sent a Cook offering over the fence in left field, staking Sumter starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery to a quick 3-0 lead. That turned out to be more than enough help for Montgomery, who went the first three innings before giving way to J.Tyler Smith, who went the next four innings.

By the time the first two of four Sumter pitchers on the night were done, they had been the beneficiaries of a 10-run outburst. Pitching-wise, Montgomery gave up two hits while fanning a pair in his abbreviated stint while Smith was even more impressive as the right-hander gave up one hit while fanning six batters in four innings of work.

P-15's clinch first

From staff reports

CHERAW - The Sumter P-15's clinched first place in American Legion baseball League III with a 26-3 victory over Cheraw on Monday at Tom Brewer Field.

The game was called after five innings due to lightning.

Sumter improved to 18-2 overall and 16-1 in league play. It leads Camden, which it has beaten three times in as many meetings, by three games with three games left to play. Camden defeated Hartsville 15-1 on Monday to improve to 13-4.

Cheraw, which came into the game trailing Manning-Santee by one game for the fourth and final playoff spot from the league, fell to 5-13 on the season.

Sumter pounded out 23 hits against Cheraw pitching. P-15's head coach Wallie Jones was pleased with the way his team approached the game.

P-15's bats blast past Manning-Santee 16-5

By DENNIS BRUNSON dennisb@theitem.com

Wallie Jones' Sumter P-15's baseball teams are known for being able to produce runs, playing what some refer to as "Wallieball." However, Jones doesn't have a problem when the P-15's pull out the big sticks like they did on Friday against Manning-Santee.

Sumter had six extra-base hits, including three home runs, among 13 hits and sent a few more to the far reaches of Riley Park for long outs as it beat Post 68 16-5 in a game called after seven innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

"We hit a lot of long balls tonight," said Jones, whose team improved to 17-2 overall and 15-1 in American Legion League III. "We made some outs at 385 feet tonight. That means the guys were squaring up good. We were swining pretty good up and down the lineup. We got hits and got in some runs."

No one was squaring up quite as well for Sumter as shortstop Bruce Caldwell. Caldwell was 3-for-4 with a double, triple and home run and six runs batted in. If he had been able to get a single, he would have hit for a reverse cycle.

P-15's down Camden

Keith Gedamke / The Item Sumter second baseman Cam Martin prepares to throw to first base during the P-15's 10-0 victory over Camden on Thursday at Riley Park.

It was an unexpected battle of American Legion baseball pitching aces for 4 1/2 innings on Thursday at Riley Park between the Sumter P-15's Jordan Montgomery and Camden's Forrest Koumas.

Not unexpected in that anyone doubted their pitching ability, but that Koumas, the University of South Carolina signee out of Lugoff-Elgin High School, was making his season debut on the mound on Thursday. In the end, it was the Sumter High product, Montgomery, who won out as the P-15's scored five in the fifth inning and took home a 10-0 win in seven innings.

The P-15's tighten their stranglehold on first place in League III as they moved to 14-1 in League III, 16-2 overall. Camden is still in second at 11-4.

"We have to play like every game we're in a tie for the league," said P-15's head coach Wallie Jones. "We're certainly not there yet. We can go on a bad roll and they can go on a good one and get right back in it. We have to play well every night."

P-15's bounce back to blank Post 175

By DENNIS BRUNSON dennisb@theitem.com

The Sumter P-15's rebounded from their first American Legion baseball League III loss of the season in a big way on Tuesday.

Sumter, which lost to Hartsville 15-5 on Monday, had 19 hits as it blasted Dalzell-Shaw Post 175 20-1 on Tuesday at the Crestwood High School field.

Even though the P-15's improved to 15-2 overall and 13-1 in league play, head coach Wallie Jones still wasn't thrilled by his team's performance.

"We kind of battled our way through it tonight," Jones said. "We came out here, did our work, scored some runs and we got finished up here.

"We got beat bad last night," Jones said. "Hartsville was just a better team last night. We've got to continue to battle and play hard."

It took Sumter some time to get going on Tuesday against the Jets, who fell to 1-13 on the season. The P-15's scored single runs in each of the first two innings before blowing the game open with a nine-run third.

Sumter got its run in the top of the first after two were out with nobody on base. Bruce Caldwell drew a walk from Jets starting pitcher Alex Cade. Michael Blackmon was hit by a pitch and Patrick Gordon, after fouling off several pitches to stay alive, ripped a ground-rule double to left to score Caldwell.
