Reardon leads P-15's to 11-3 win over Cheraw
Saturday, June 19, 2010
By DENNIS BRUNSON dennisb@theitem.com
With shortstop/pitcher Bruce Caldwell nursing a sore throwing arm, Sumter P-15's head coach Wallie Jones wanted to give him a night off from his duties at shortstop but keep his bat in the No. 3 hole in the lineup as the designated hitter. Thus, Jones changed his pitching plans for Friday's American Legion baseball game against Cheraw, starting Andrew Reardon on the mound as opposed to Jeremy Buckner, who would start in center and stay in the No. 2 spot in the order.
The left-handed Reardon made the move be a good one as he allowed just two runs in six innings of work as the P-15's defeated Cheraw 11-3 at Riley Park.
"Reardon gave us a good job tonight," said Jones, whose team improved to 14-1 overall and 12-0 in League III. "He gave us six good innings and battled after pitching three innings just two nights before. He gutted it out for us."
Reardon worked six innings to get the victory. He struck out eight while walking two and allowing just four hits.
Reardon didn't allow a hit through the first three innings before giving up a single to Taylor Lang to start the fourth. Cheraw, which fell to 2-9 on the season, loaded the bases with two outs but couldn't' get a run across.

P-15's roll past Post 68
Friday, June 18, 2010
By DENNIS BRUNSON dennisb@theitem.com
MANNING -- Tyler A. Smith didn't look long for the mound for the Sumter P-15's after he had faced the first five batters in the Manning-Santee Post 68 lineup in their baseball game on Thursday at the at the Manning High School field. Five hard-hit balls led to four hits, two runs and a 2-1 Manning lead.
And Sumter head coach Wallie Jones, who was already fretting about his pitching with the right-handed J. Tyler Smith playing in the North-South All-Star Game and the P-15's having already burned four pitchers in the first two games of the week, had only one thought: "Who am I going to pitch," he said.
It ended up being Tyler A. Smith.
From that point on, the left-handed pitcher was on his game. He didn't allow another hit in seven innings of work as Sumter rolled to an 18-2 victory to remain undefeated in American Legion League III.
Sumter improved to 13-1 overall and 11-0 in league play. Manning fell to 3-8 on the season.
Smith threw 40 pitches in the first two innings combined and finished with 103 as he worked seven innings. He struck out five and walked two.
"Tyler just settled down after that start," Jones said. "He went from people hitting line drives off of him to controlling the game. He was hitting his spots really well and settled down and pitched an outstanding game."

P-15's rally to win, take control of 1st place
Wednesday, June 16, 2010
By TOM DIDATO Special To The Item
CAMDEN - One night after having its American Legion baseball game at Cheraw stopped by a possible tornado, Camden Post 17 ran into a problem of a more human nature on Tuesday.
Sumter's lefty-righty pitching tandem of Jordan Montgomery and Bruce Caldwell combined to set down 18 Post 17 batters on strikes to take a two-game lead in the win column over the hosts atop the League III standings following a 7-4 victory at American Legion Park in a game which started more than 45 minutes after its scheduled 7 p.m. start due to lightning in the area.
Once the game started, the only bolts which were to be seen were those delivered by the two Post 15 hurlers. Montgomery, a left-hander, got the starting nod and worked six innings of four-hit ball. He fanned 11 batters, but was trailing 3-2 after he pitched his final inning. However, Sumter scored three runs in the top of the seventh to go up 5-3, putting Montgomery in line for the victory, which he did pick up.
Caldwell came on to start the seventh. The right-hander gave up an unearned run on four hits with seven punchouts to earn the save for Sumter, which improved to 11-1 overall and 9-0 in league play.

P-15's Jones happy with outcome in Challenge
Tuesday, June 15, 2010
The Sumter P-15's didn't return home from the North Carolina-South Carolina American Legion Baseball Challenge with the undefeated record they took with them to Cherryville, N.C., over the weekend, but head coach Wallie Jones had no problems with his team's performance.
"All in all, I felt like it was a profitable weekend for us," said Jones, whose team beat Shelby, N.C., 2-1 and Cherryville 11-0 on Saturday before losing to Rowan, N.C., 3-2 on Sunday to fall to 10-1 on the season. "If you would have told me we would win two of three before we went up there, I would have taken that.
"We'd played six straight days, took Friday off, played a doubleheader on Saturday and another game on Sunday. That's nine games in nine days, so I think we came through that pretty well."
Sumter had outstanding pitching throughout the three games. Right-hander J. Tyler Smith limited Shelby to one run in nine innings and lefty Tyler A. Smith allowed two hits while striking out six and walking none in throwing a shutout against Cherryville in a game called after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. In the loss to Rowan, righty Jeremy Buckner limited the defending Southeast Regional champion to two runs and six hits in five innings while striking out six and walking one.
